Chess for Beginners

In this chess for beginners lesson I show you now how to give checkmate with a queen only. This is basic chess knowledge. You have to know this because if you are winning, you will have to promote a pawn into a queen eventually.

This happens most likely in the endgame, when there are only a few pieces on the board. Then, you must be able to give checkmate with a queen or you can’t win the game. It is as simple as that.

If you like to learn more about how the queen moves Go here.

Typical Checkmates

Below you see typical checkmates of queen versus king. Memorize these positions. Just understand that the queen on its own can’t achieve nothing. The queen needs to be helped by the king as he
has to protect her when giving checkmate. (See first image on left below)

Or the king will cut off the opponents king and your queen will then give checkmate on the last rank. (See first image on right)

Now it is your turn. Play the game below as White and give checkmate to the black king. The king can move one square only. The queen can move like a bishop on the diagonals AND like a rook along the ranks and rows.

When you are able to win the position below, then you have learned how to move the king AND the queen correctly.

Keep in mind that you must be able to give checkmate within fifty moves or the game is a draw, which means every player gets half a point. (Fifty move rule)

You are White – Win it!
